When George Clooney Was Paid 20 Times Less Than Arnold Schwarzenegger And Held Responsible For The Film’s Failure

The Actor Opened Up About His Experience Working On The Film And Discussed How He Was Held Accountable

George Clooney, one of the top actors in Hollywood, has had an illustrious career with several remarkable roles. However, one particular role in the film ‘Batman and Robin’ made him reconsider his approach to work. Moreover, the pay gap between him and his co-star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, left him feeling disheartened.

In the movie ‘Batman and Robin,’ George Clooney portrayed the iconic character of Batman, while Arnold Schwarzenegger played the main villain, Mr. Freeze. Interestingly, the film faced significant criticism, and the blame seemed to fall heavily on Clooney’s shoulders. During The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, George candidly discussed the film and the substantial pay disparity between him and Schwarzenegger.

George revealed, “Arnold was paid, I think, $30 million, like 20 times what I was paid. We didn’t even work together, we only worked together for one day. But after that, I took all the blame.”

Despite the disappointment and negative experience with ‘Batman and Robin,’ George Clooney admitted that he learned valuable lessons from the film’s failure. He recognized that the film’s performance compelled him to rethink his approach to acting. No longer was he merely an actor playing a role; he was also made responsible for the whole movie itself.

Reflecting on the movie’s release in 1997, ‘Batman and Robin’ turned out to be one of the worst-rated Batman films to date. Despite boasting a star-studded cast, the film struggled to overcome its critical and box office failures.

George Clooney’s experience with ‘Batman and Robin’ was a turning point in his career, leading him to become more thoughtful about the projects he chooses and his level of involvement in them. It taught him the importance of taking on responsibilities beyond just acting.
