Jo Koy Clarifies: ‘Just Supporting Taylor Swift Amid Backlash Over Golden Globes 2024 Joke’

Swift, known for her support of the Kansas City Chiefs and her boyfriend Travis Kelce, often attends NFL games. However, her presence has generated mixed reactions from fans, some blaming her for the team's performance.

Comedian Jo Koy found himself caught in a swirl of controversy after poking fun at Taylor Swift during the 2024 Golden Globes. However, he is now claiming to be a genuine supporter of the pop sensation, just days after the incident.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Jo Koy expressed his confusion over the backlash, stating, “I didn’t understand the Taylor [Swift] tiff. What hurts the most is me just supporting Taylor, I support her, I love her work. There’s no ill intent in that joke.”

During his Golden Globes opening monologue, Koy made a wisecrack about Swift, comparing the number of camera shots at the awards to those during NFL games. The attempt at humor fell flat, prompting a quick apology from the comedian. Despite the apology, Swift’s reaction was evident as she gave him a disapproving look while sipping her drink.

Koy, however, insists that the joke was not intended to target Swift personally. He explained, “It’s like, the cool thing about the [Golden] Globes is we don’t need to do cutaways for ratings.”

In a prior comment to “Entertainment Tonight,” Jo Koy mentioned finding NFL cutaways of Taylor Swift “cute,” emphasizing that the comment was not meant to be malicious.

Setting the record straight, Swift addressed the issue in her 2023 Time Person of the Year profile, stating, “I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads.”

Jo Koy’s clarification about being a Swiftie aims to put an end to the controversy and emphasizes his genuine admiration for Taylor Swift despite the earlier comedic misstep.
