Harry Styles’ New Single ‘As It Was’ Meaning Revealed

Though Harry has yet to confirm the meaning of As It Was, fans believe the song includes a subtle reference to Harry's relationship with Olivia Wilde.

Harry Styles has recently released his first new music after more than two years. Days after announcing his forthcoming third album Harry’s House, the Grammy-winning singer dropped the record’s first and lead single As It Was. In the music video, directed by Tanu Muino, the musician is seen wearing different variations of red as he seemingly chases after his love interest in blue.

In the next scene, the pair is then found in the middle of a large, empty hall on a spinning platform as they attempt to make their way to each other, all captured through artistic visuals. Styles then finds himself being pulled apart from her, before ending up all alone to conclude the video with an energetic dance scene. Like Watermelon Sugar, fans might be wondering about the meaning behind Harry Styles’ new song As It Was.

However, the new single is not about female orgasms like Watermelon Sugar. As It Was is somewhat similar to the more reflective songs on his album Fine Line. The new single probes Styles’ own image, and particularly his conflicting feelings around the stardom he’s amassed, the kind that might make mental health, not to mention romance, a challenge. Meanwhile, this is a subject Styles seems poised to address often in his new album, which he announced would arrive on May 20.

Though Harry has yet to confirm the meaning of As It Was, fans believe the song is about his relationship with fame and how his life isn’t ‘the same as it was’ since he’s entered the public eye. Fans also believe the song includes a subtle reference to Harry’s relationship with Olivia Wilde, whom he started dating in January 2021 after he was cast as the lead in Wilde’s upcoming movie, Don’t Worry Darling.
