Harry Styles Addresses Criticism That He Is Taking Advantage Of The LGBTQ+ Community

Harry Style responded to accusations that he appropriated gay aesthetics without claiming to be a member of the community when critics alleged that he had done so.

When addressing his sexuality with Rolling Stone’s Brittany Spanos in the September 2022 issue, Harry Styles remarked, Sometimes people say, ‘You’ve only publicly been with women,’ and I don’t think I’ve publicly been with anyone.” The LBTQIA+ community has criticised Harry, 28, for his “gender fluidity in fashion,” and others have said that in response, he has copied gay beliefs and aesthetics without outwardly identifying as a member of the group.

“If someone takes a picture of you with someone, it doesn’t mean you’re choosing to have a public relationship or something,” Harry said in response to the points made about how he identifies. Back when he was a member of One Direction, Harry’s sexuality was the topic of rumours and conjecture. The singer of ‘As It Was’ admitted to Spanos that he has given up attempting to clear up misconceptions and worried about what other people might think.

He remarked in Rolling Stone, “I’ve never talked about my life away from work publicly and found that it’s benefited me positively. There’s always going to be a version of a narrative, and I think I just decided I wasn’t going to spend the time trying to correct it or redirect it in some way.” These remarks come ahead of Harry’s performance in the movie My Policeman, in which he portrays the title officer who falls in love with David Dawson, whose role is as a museum curator.

The movie takes place in the 1950s when same-sex unions were still forbidden in the United Kingdom. “It’s obviously pretty unfathomable now to think, ‘Oh, you couldn’t be gay. That was illegal,'” Styles says of the movie. “I think everyone, including myself, has your own journey with figuring out sexuality and getting more comfortable with it.” Styles said that the movie was a human narrative. “It’s not like, ‘This is a gay story about these guys being gay.'”

“It’s about love and about wasted time to me,” he continued, noting that the movie will emphasise the delicate and emotional nature of a same-s*x relationship. “So much of gay s*x in the film is two guys going at it, and it kind of removes the tenderness from it,” he elaborated. “There will be, I would imagine, some people who watch it who were very much alive during this time when it was illegal to be gay, and [Michael] wanted to show that it’s tender and loving and sensitive.”
