Shahrukh Khan’s presence at Lata Mangeshkar’s funeral has sparked a controversy. King Khan was spotted paying his last respects to the legendary singer who passed away on Feb 6 at the age of 92. Ahead of the final rites, Shahrukh was seen raising his hands in prayer as he offered dua (prayer) for the deceased. He was then seen removing his mask and blowing out air from his mouth as he bent over Lata Mangeshkar’s mortal remains. This gesture is a part of the prayer in Islam. Shahrukh was accompanied by his manager Pooja Dadlani.
The act of Shahrukh blowing air at Lata Mangeshkar’s mortal remains was perceived wrongly by some people. The actor was accused of allegedly ‘spitting’ at her. However, Shahrukh’s fans and well-wishers have come out in his support while schooling the ignorant people.
Actor turned politician Urmila Matondkar has also supported Shahrukh. She said in an interview, “As a society, we have deteriorated so much that we think praying is spitting. You are talking about an actor who has represented the country on various international platforms. Politics has reached such low levels and it’s really sad.”
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit also expressed his anger over the ongoing controversy. He wrote in a tweet, “Fringe targeting @iamsrk by falsely accusing him of spitting at #LataMangeshkar Ji’s funeral should be ashamed of themselves. He prayed & blew on her mortal remains for protection & blessings in her onward journey. Such communal filth has no place in a country like ours.”
Meanwhile, people on the internet are sharing a clip from Shahrukh Khan’s film ‘My Name Is Khan’ in which his character is seen doing the same.
Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Feb 6, 2022, due to multiple organ failure. She was also battling Covid and pneumonia.
