Sonali Bendre Recalls Losing Films Due To Underworld Influence Over Bollywood

Sonali Bendre reveals she was replaced in films due to the pressure from the underworld over film industry

Back in 90’s Sonali Bendre was a popular actress in Bollywood. She has made remarkable work in movies such as Sarfarosh, Major Saab, Diljale, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai, and English Babu Desi Mem among others. After a long hiatus from acting Sonali has returned with a new web series ‘The Broken News’. The actress made a major revelation about her struggle to get roles in movies.

Sonali Bendre mentioned that she was replaced in many movies due to the pressure of the underworld in Bollywood. In the 1990s Bollywood was under the influence of the underworld which affected the work of some actors and Sonali Bendre was one of them. The actress, who has featured in films like Hum Saath Saath Hai and Humara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, opened up about the tough times she has faced.

She indicated being replaced in films due to the pressure from the underworld. She said, “Many clean sources were financing films. But, there was not a proper, formal industry status. So, there was a lot of unregulated finance coming in as well, and banks will not give it to you. So, that limit was there. There were times when I was supposed to do a role and it went to someone else because someone called them up. But then the director or the co-actor will call you and say ‘I have that pressure and I can’t do anything about it,’ and, I understand.”

Sonali Bendre made her OTT debut with a new web series titled ‘The Broken News’. The show also stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Indraneil Sengupta, Taaruk Raina, Aakash Khurana, and Kiran Kumar. The Broken News is an Indian adaption of the popular British series Press. The eight episodes series is now streaming on Zee 5 app.
