“Hare Rama Hare Krishna” was a hit film of the year 1971. It was written, directed and produced by Dev Anand. It featured Dev Anand along with Zeenat Aman, Mumtaz and Prem Chopra. Before his death, Dev Anand wished to make “Hare Rama Hare Krishna 2.” Prem Chopra made the revelation in an exclusive interview.
While having a heart-to-heart conversation with senior journalist Bharathi S Pradhan, veteran actor Prem Chopra recalled working with Dev Anand and shared some fun-filled stories from the time they worked together. Prem said, “I did 5-6 films with him. He was full of energy. He was a man with so much passion for filmmaking. He used to write his own dialogues in English. It was an experience to work with him. He was so energetic that he also became an inspiration for other people. I remember we were shooting for Hare Rama Hare Krishna in Kathmandu. While talking to the cameraman and explaining the shot, he climbed up the hill. He asked the cameraman to climb up as well and he was like, ‘Arre ye to chala gya, mai kaise jau itni upar’.”
Prem said, “For Dev Anand, if one shot is off, the other shot is on! Even if his films didn’t work, it never gave him a complex. He was such a positive man. He died with his boots on. He had gone to London for treatment and before going, he told me that I should be ready for “Hare Krishna Hare Rama 2”.
Praising the late superstar, Prem added, “I never saw him talking against anybody. He was not a politician. Other people were. He was a very disciplined man.”
Sharing another anecdote, Prem said, “When we used to go outdoors, he’d be like, ‘Come one, today we’ll have some drink together. He used to take some red wine. He would drink half a glass and then he’ll be like, ‘Okay, you enjoy’.”
Prem Chopra mentioned that he shared screen space with Dev Anand in “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” and “Des Pardes” and these film performed well at the box office.
