Pathaan Director Addresses Constant Comparison From Hollywood

Siddharth Anand speaks of the constant comparison of Pathan to movies made in Hollywood.

Pathan has created a history in Indian cinema. It has become the highest-grossing movie in 2023 and is still counting from its opening day. Today the director of Pathaan Siddharth Anand addressed the fact that his movie is being continuously addressed similar to Hollywood movies.

After his directorial debut with Salaam Namaste in 2005, Siddharth Anand directed three more rom-coms: Bachna Ae Haseeno, Anjaana Anjaani etc. Directed four years later Bang Bang!, the action genre in 2014 and War, the top-grossing Bollywood film of 2019.

Anand kicked off 2023 with one of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters, Pathaan, which marked Shah Rukh Khan’s return to the big screen marks and has grossed a whopping Rs 696 crore worldwide within nine days of its theatrical release. The action film, which also stars John Abraham and Deepika Padukone, features several sensational gravity-defying action sets set around the world. In a recent interview, the filmmaker was asked how he would react to Pathaan being called a “pale imitation of Hollywood”.

While giving an interviewing to Gulf News, Siddharth said: “It’s inevitable when you make a film that goes beyond the conventions of Bollywood films. You’re immediately compared to Hollywood, which obviously has better infrastructure, better technology, and bigger budgets. It will always seem like we’re trying to emulate that, but our limits are much bigger.”

“We also have ambitions, our directors have the ability to edit films, but we are limited by scope because our films are made in a language that is Hindi Our income is directly proportional to the budgets we can afford. So we have certain limitations, but I think we’re doing very well, we’re telling stories that go around the world and are appreciated everywhere,” he concluded.
