Aamir Khan has contributed significantly to Indian cinema with some of its finest films, often embedding special messages in his movies. One such film is Taare Zameen Par, a box office success that sheds light on learning disorders faced by children and emphasizes that these conditions are not diseases. The movie revolves around a child struggling with reading and writing, diagnosed with dyslexia.
Darsheel Safary portrays the child character facing learning difficulties in the film, while Aamir Khan plays the role of an art teacher. In one pivotal scene, Khan praises Abhishek Bachchan as a successful star and cites him as an example, revealing Bachchan’s childhood struggle with reading and writing: “Bachpan mein isko bhi padhne likhne mein takleef hoti thi. Lekin ab dekho, kya Dhoom macha raha hai!” (Even in his childhood, he had trouble with reading and writing. But look at what a sensation he is now!)
However, not widely known is that Aamir Khan sought permission from Amitabh Bachchan before using Abhishek’s name and photograph in the film. When Mumbai Mirror reached out to Abhishek for comment, he confirmed, ‘Yes, Aamir has taken permission from us before using my name and photograph in the film.’
Abhishek himself revealed his dyslexia during the Mind Rocks India Today Youth Summit in Chennai, stating that he was diagnosed at the age of nine. ‘I was diagnosed with dyslexia at nine and sent to a European school, but only realized my condition after graduating,’ he shared. ‘Recognizing these challenges in education is crucial, and the disregard for slow learners needs to change,’ he added.
Released in 2007, Taare Zameen Par was co-directed by Aamir Khan and Amole Gupte.
