Ek Chatur Naar Critic Review:
There is a lot going for writer-director Umesh Shukla’s new film that strikes a quirky equation between Mamta Mishra (Divya Khossla Kumar) from the slums and suited-booted Abhishek Verma (Neil Nitin Mukesh).
And take it from us, there’s nothing romantic going on between them.
But what Mamta is all about doesn’t add up. She’s got a kid and a mother-in-law (Chhaya Kadam) who hits the bottle all the time. She’s got a job at the railways and moonlights as a waiter. And the three stay in a locked up little flat, leading the landlord on a merry chase.
Along with writers Siddharth Goel, Jay Master, Deepak Nirman and Himanshu Tripathi, Umesh Shukla’s feel for comedy strikes from the first note. But the story really gets going when suave but sleazy Abhishek Verma who’s late for a meeting with a politician (Zakir Hussain), dumps his car that’s stuck in a traffic snarl, jumps into the metro and loses his mobile phone.
From that moment onwards, there are twists and turns that find Mamta crisscrossing with Abhishek, she’s always two steps ahead of him.
It’s a refreshing watch, fun too, even as you wonder how a woman like Mamta is so clever.
Somewhere along the way, Inspector Triloki (Sushant Singh) joins the ride, his abilities as a cop rather questionable.
Until there’s a climax where so much is unspooled that the Mamta-mother-in-law bond and the threads between the major characters, get a credible link.
So, there is a method in the madness, a story behind the badass antics of Mamta.
Additionally, Divya Khossla Kumar gets her act right while Neil Nitin Mukesh is always comfortable when he’s a polished crook.
While it’s not a classic, it does have something deeper than the overt fun.
But the problem is, how many will go watch a Divya-Neil film in the theatres?
Ek Chatur Naar Watch Or Not?: With such a clutter in the cinema halls, in case you miss it, do catch it on OTT.
