Carl Thomas Dean, the ultra-private husband of country music legend Dolly Parton, has passed away at the age of 82. On Monday, DOlly shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, stating that Dean has passed away in Nashville and the cause of death has not been disclosed.
“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy,” Dolly Parton wrote in her statement. “The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.” As her statement read, Dolly Parton’s husband will be laid to rest in a private ceremony attended by immediate family members.
Born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1942 Carl Dean was one of the children of Virginia “Ginny” Bates Dean and Edgar “Ed” Henry Dean. Little was publicly known about his life before he met Parton in 1964 outside a laundromat. Meanwhile, at the time when Parton moved to Nashville to pursue her career in music, she was just 18. And recalling her first encounter with her husband, she once said, “I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face. He seemed genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about.”
Two years later, on May 30, 1966, the couple tied the knot in a small, private ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia with only Parton’s mother, the pastor and his wife as witnesses. Despite Dolly Parton’s meteoric rise to fame in the late 1960s, Dean maintained a low profile and focused on his asphalt business, who preferred staying out of the limelight for his entire life.
However, throughout their nearly 60-year marriage, Dolly Parton’s husband rarely made public appearances with her which often led to speculations among fans that he might not even exist. Later in 1984 interview, Parton joked saying, “A lot of people say there’s no Carl Dean, that he’s just somebody I made up to keep other people off me.” Despite all these bizarre speculations, their love for eachother was very real behind-the-scenes and Dean has been a greatest support for her.
The couple renewed their vows in 2016 to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Parton often shared glimpses of their relationship, saying that Dean wrote her poetry and surprised her with small gestures like picking daffodils in the spring. “He’s always supporting me as long as I don’t try to drag him in on it,” she said.
Carl Dean is survived by his wife, Dolly Parton and his siblings, Sandra and Donnie. His quiet, steadfast support for Parton throughout her illustrious career remains a testament to their extraordinary bond.
