Crazxy Movie Critic Review:
The Sohum Shah filmmaking banner comes with a suitcase, currency notes blowing out of it. Start and Finish come misspelt. It’s a wonky world.
Tall, suited-booted surgeon Dr Abhimanyu Sood (Sohum Shah) strides towards his Range Rover, a duffel bag stuffed with cash is stashed in the boot. Rs 5 crore, you soon learn. There’s menace hanging in the air. Inside the car with White Coat calling, hyper and bossy. “I’ll be there on time,” the surgeon assures White Coat. Outside, a wheelie-performing two-wheeler dashes across the Range Rover, the rider cheekily showing a blurred middle finger. Our doctor is hot-headed. Must give it back. Chases the two-wheeler, returns the finger gesture before resuming his drive to God-knows-where.
A man with a mask leers at Abhimanyu from the window. Currency notes have been peeping out of the bag in the boot, prompting the mask to leer some more.
The scene is set for the unexpected.
With only Dr Abhimanyu Sood at the wheel, miles of traffic jams and lonely, dusty trail ahead, writer-director Girish Kohli (who wrote movies like Mom and Kesari) teams with Sohum Shah (of Tumbbad and Ship of Theseus fame) to come up with the actor-producer’s third original film. A thriller that dares to go on a long drive with just one actor, all other players coming in through the phone screen to provide twists, turns and question marks.
It’s April 1, announces an RJ.
The plot and characters unspool through conversations. Abhimanyu braces himself before speaking to Ex (Nimisha Sajayan). A bird drops its crap on his windshield. Telling. A ‘Mujhe chhod ke…’ tune playing, you learn from Ex that Abhimanyu is divorced, he’s been a horrid dad to 11-year-old Vedika, a child with Downs Syndrome. There’s a smile for Jaan (Shilpa Shukla), the clingy, current flame who wants priority in his life.
Not just a bad dad, he’s also a doctor in the dock for medical negligence, to be jailed if he doesn’t make an out-of-court settlement right now. There’s substance abuse too on his resume.
Worse. A kidnapper has got Vedika.
Rescue his daughter at all costs? Or dump her, go settle his case and stay out of jail?
His name facilitates a telling, ‘Abhimanyu, chakravyuh mein phas gaya hai tu’ (from Inquilaab) as a BG number, with Abhimanyu driving like a maniac to meet his deadline.“Before sunset. Or I can’t handle her”, an ominous warning from kidnapper (Tinnu Anand). Visuals of Vedika on the floor.
Gets stuck in the mud, at one time a police car chases him on a lonely muddy stretch, a rearview mirror comes off, he’s got to fix a puncture, he’s got to put his hand through an insect-hole to retrieve a tool. Emergency surgery has to be performed back in the OT on one of his patients. Black Coat tells him he needs to settle, he can’t keep him out of jail.
Everything comes at him at furious speed. Reckless, risky driving. With BG songs like ‘Kallu Mama…’ and ‘Goli maar bheje mein’ from Satya keeping him company in the background. A bank loan offer (seen in the trailer) is a chuckle though Neeraj Pandey had done something similar during a tense scene with the Commissioner of Police in A Wednesday.
There are interesting if stomach-churning moments. Abhimanyu alone outside the Range Rover, windmills as the backdrop. Three sweat-drawing tasks to be performed simultaneously. Change the huge tyre of the Range Rover. Surgery through a video call. Negotiate with the kidnapper. Another scene with construction lights flashing, sacks that must be unrolled to find daughter.
Go to jail at the end of it? Find his daughter safe and sound?
Everything you can think of happens. An accident. Leg injured. Come on, doc, put back the dislocated knee however excruciating the experience. Limp.
A dad in the dock.
A doctor in the dock.
Does he deserve redemption?
It may be April 1 but at the end of it, Girish Kohli has something special to convey with mercifully, more substance than an empty schoolgirl’s prank.
But Kohli takes an untrodden path that has its red lights. One is the pace. At places, monotony cannot keep it riveting with just one man driving on and on, every mishap in the book strewn en route. Too many BG songs, one even when dad breaks down.
The end too is prolonged, designed to draw tears. But does ‘Oh Papa’ have the same impactful pathos as ‘Maa’ from Taare Zameen Par which made the same point about sensitivity in a vastly different way?
It’s a tough job for Sohum Shah but he does it all. From cocky, dapper doc to dishevelled, repentant human, he has the personality to carry off the film.
Crazxy Movie – Watch Or Not?: It is a different, original experience with a message to cherish at the end of it.
