James Cameron’s helming film Avatar hit theatres back in 2009. The movie broke both domestic and global box office records. The epic sci-fi film was nominated for nine Academy Awards and ended up winning three. Following the massive success of the film, Cameron signed with 20th Century Fox to produce four sequels.
However, Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar 3 have completed filming, and are scheduled to be released on December 16, 2022, and December 20, 2024, respectively. Meanwhile, the remaining sequels are scheduled to be released on December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028. Avatar was available to stream on Disney+. However, ahead of the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, the first instalment will be re-released in theatres to give a recap to the audience.
Avatar will return to theatres for two weeks starting from September 23 and will be shown in ‘all formats,’ including IMAX, 4K / HDR, and 3D. Avatar is set in the mid-22nd century when humans are colonizing Pandora, a lush habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system, in order to mine the valuable mineral unobtanium. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na’vi, a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora.
Meanwhile, the upcoming sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, will be set more than a decade after the events of the first film and tell the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive and the tragedies they endure. Avatar: The Way of Water cast includes, Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet.
