Zubeen Garg Says He Owes His Entire Career To His Mother: “Maa Ne Hi Sab Kiya…”

The state of Assam and the entire nation continue to mourn the loss of legendary singer Zubeen Garg who passed away on September 19, 2025 in Singapore. Known for his immense contribution to music and social work, Zubeen was more than just a singer -an icon who represented his roots with pride. Reminiscing a rare throwback interview of Zubeen Garg with Lehren, talking about his mother Ily Borthakur he beautifully reflected through their bond and credited his “Maa” for shaping entire career and life.

In that special conversation, when asked about his early music training and admiration for his mother, Zubeen fondly said, “Sabse pehle mujhe gaana Maa ne sikhayi thi, uske baadh she introduced me to tabla, to learn tabla and my guru was Robin Bannerjee. Toh 10-12 saal tabla seekha maine aur uske baadh fir folk music seekha Assam ka.”

He added with pride, “I owe everything to my mother, my main backbone is my mother. Maa ne hi sab kiya hai.” Zubeen described her as his first guru and mentor, who not only taught him music but also gave him the strength and discipline that guided him through life.

Zubeen Garg often mentioned how his Mother was a talented dancer and singer herself and how her influence helped him develop a deep connection with music from a very young age. “She was my first teacher, and I learned everything from her,” he had shared.

Talking about his inspirations in the musical industry, Zubeen added, “Main bahut logon se inspired hu basically – Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan saab se, Kishore Kumar, S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman aur bahar ke Sting hai, international artist. Sting is my favourite. Pink Floyd hai, bahut logon se inspiration mila hai mujhe zindagi mein.”

Zubeen’s passing has left a void in the hearts of millions but his words and music continue to inspire generations, and his deep respect and love for his mother show how family shaped his artistic soul.
