After much anticipation, Sitaare Zameen Par has hit theatres, drawing strong reactions from audiences. However, the film has also sparked discussion online, with many claiming it’s a remake of the Hollywood film Champions, starring Woody Harrelson. While Aamir Khan earlier responded to these speculations, director R.S. Prasanna has now spoken up as well.
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Prasanna didn’t directly deny or confirm the remake claims but made his stance clear. “I just feel the film will have the answers. It is best for the director to talk through the film. As far as I am concerned, there is so much love for the film. I am consumed by that,” he said, choosing to focus on audience appreciation rather than online chatter.
When asked if he’s bothered by the comparisons, he simply stated, “I am just consumed by the love for the film.”
Shubh Mangal Saavdhan director R.S. Prasanna is back in action after eight years. Known for tackling unconventional stories his directorial debut Kalyana Samayal Saadham dealt with erectile dysfunction, a rare theme in Indian cinema. Now with Sitaare Zameen Par he presents another sensitive story this time about a hot-headed basketball coach who ends up coaching neurodivergent adults as part of his community service after a DUI charge.
The film is backed by Aamir Khan himself alongwith Aparna Purohit, stars Aamir alongside Genelia Deshmukh and was released on June 20. It’s positioned as a spiritual successor to Taare Zameen Par (2007), with themes of empathy, understanding, and personal growth.
With R.S. Prasanna’s words we can say he encourages audience that rather engaging in such debates, experience the film directly in theatres. Whether it’s a remake or not, the film’s heart seems to lie in its message – something that deserves to be seen and felt.
