On April 17, 2004, Soundarya, who starred alongside Amitabh Bachchan in Sooryavansham, tragically lost her life in a plane crash close to Bangalore. She was traveling to Karimnagar to support political candidate Ramesh Kadam. Her brother Amarnath was with her, and both unfortunately died in the incident.
One day prior to her passing, Soundarya had a conversation with Tamil director R.V. Udayakumar. During this discussion, she revealed that she was two months pregnant and intended to step away from her acting career. She had recently finished her role in the Kannada remake of Chandramukhi, which she intended to be her last film. Udayakumar remembered their exchange, highlighting her wish to prioritize her family.
At the time of her tragic passing, Soundarya was two months pregnant and had recently conveyed her intention to retire from acting. In a 2019 interview, renowned Tamil director R V Udayakumar shared that Soundarya had reached out to him personally to inform him that the Kannada remake of Chandramukhi would be her final project. She had decided to focus on her family and embrace the new journey of motherhood.
“After completing her shoot, she called me to let me know it would be her last film due to her pregnancy. That day, she spoke with me and my wife for almost an hour. The very next day, I was stunned to see the news of her death on television. It is a shock I will never forget,” Udayakumar recalled with deep emotion.
Soundarya’s passing at the age of 31 marked a profound loss for Indian cinema. Renowned for her diverse performances in Telugu and Kannada films, she is particularly remembered for her role in Sooryavansham. Her premature departure created a significant gap in the film industry.
