Hera Pheri is a heist comedy-drama film directed by Priyadarshan, featuring a cast that includes Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Tabu, Om Puri, and Gulshan Grover. This film is a remake of the 1989 Malayalam movie Ramji Rao Speaking, which was inspired by the 1971 American television film See the Man Run. It marks the first installment in the Hera Pheri franchise. The storyline centers on two tenants, Raju and Shyam, along with their landlord, Baburao Ganpatrao Apte, who find themselves in urgent need of financial assistance.
Hera Pheri was released in March 2000; the film is now celebrating its 25th anniversary in this month. It received mixed reviews, with particular praise for the performances of Kumar and Rawal. This film is recognized as Kumar’s entry into the comedy genre. The film later led to a sequel, Phir Hera Pheri, which was released in 2006.
Priyadarshan, the director of Hera Pheri, specifically sought to cast Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, and Paresh Rawal due to his belief that they possessed the ideal chemistry and comedic timing essential for the film. This project marked Priyadarshan’s initial collaboration with both Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty, establishing a long-term partnership with all three actors. Following the success of Hera Pheri, Priyadarshan has consistently included Kumar, Shetty, Rawal, or various combinations of these actors in his subsequent films.
Akshay’s talent for merging humor with action rendered him an ideal candidate for the role of Raju, which demanded both slapstick comedy and a touch of seriousness. Sunil Shetty, recognized for his rugged persona, had previously taken on comedic roles. Priyadarshan identified him as the perfect match for the character of Shyam, who embodied a more serious and grounded demeanor in the film. Paresh Rawal, a veteran actor celebrated for his exceptional comic timing, portrayed the character of Baburao Ganpatrao Apte (Babu Bhaiya), who became an iconic presence in the film. Priyadarshan was well aware of Rawal’s expertise in portraying comic roles infused with eccentricity, confident that Paresh would infuse the film with the right blend of madness and depth.
The chemistry among Akshay, Sunil, and Paresh was vital to the success of Hera Pheri.
