Netflix is reportedly in early discussions to develop a sequel to the beloved teen drama series One Tree Hill, with original cast members Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton Morgan potentially returning to their iconic roles. This news comes as a delight to fans who have long hoped for a revival of the popular series, which originally aired from 2003 to 2012.
Netflix is eyeing a continuation that brings back key characters while introducing fresh narratives to appeal to both new viewers and the show’s dedicated fan base. While no official deal has been finalized, the streaming giant is keen on exploring a sequel that would build upon the show’s original premise, which followed the lives of a group of friends navigating love, loss, and personal growth in the fictional town of Tree Hill, North Carolina.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the original show’s producer, Warner Bros. Television is also in talks to return for the potential sequel of the show.
Sophia Bush, who portrayed the beloved character Brooke Davis, and Hilarie Burton Morgan, who played Peyton Sawyer, are both reportedly in talks to reprise their roles. The involvement of these two fan-favourite actors has been a key selling point in the negotiations, as both have maintained a strong connection with the series’ fan community over the years.
Bush and Burton Morgan will executive produce the show with their co-star from the original show, Dannel Ackles. The additional cast of the potential sequel will also include Chad Michael Murray, Bethany Joy Lenz, James Lafferty, Paul Johansson, Lee Norris and more. Netflix is reportedly considering onboarding Becky Hartman Edwards, known for Firefly Lane) to write the script.
Since ending its original run, One Tree Hill has gained a new generation of fans through streaming platforms, making it a valuable property for Netflix. The streaming service is known for reviving nostalgic shows with contemporary reboots or sequels, a trend that has proven successful with series like Gilmore Girls and Fuller House.
