India’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka was announced on July 18. Suryakumar Yadav has been chosen as the captain of the Indian T20 team over Hardik Pandya, who was also in the running. The upcoming T20I three-match series against Sri Lanka will begin on July 27.
Hardik Pandya, who recently announced his divorce from wife and actress Natasa Stankovic, has been barred from taking on any leadership roles in the upcoming Sri Lanka series, including Vice Captain. Pandya was the Vice Captain for the T20 World Cup 2024.
According to a recent report, player trust played a significant role in Suryakumar Yadav’s selection over Pandya. The players reportedly felt more at ease working under Yadav. According to the report, feedback to the BCCI indicated that players trusted Yadav more and felt more at ease working under his leadership. The report also stated that, while the BCCI and the selection committee recognize Pandya as an important member of the Indian team, they do not consider him a potential leader.
Suryakumar Yadav’s management skills in dealing with players are also important. Yadav led Team India in a T20 series in South Africa. One incident mentioned in the report was when Ishan Kishan wanted to leave mid-series, Surya persuaded him to stay, gaining the attention of key team members. It also stated that Suryakumar Yadav’s communication style is similar to Rohit Sharma’s, making it easier for players to discuss with him.
