Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore were celebrated for their remarkable on-screen chemistry, contributing to some of the most significant film successes of their era. Their collaboration spanned several films, leaving a lasting impression on audiences. Khanna, a prominent superstar, commanded a level of fame that extended beyond his acting career. His immense popularity, especially among female fans, often led to extreme expressions of admiration, including writing letters in blood, marrying his images, and overwhelming him during public events. Sharmila once expressed her relief upon concluding their professional partnership.

Years after Rajesh Khanna’s passing in 2022, Sharmila Tagore recounted her experiences with the iconic actor in the audiobook titled Rajesh Khanna: Ek Tanha Sitara, released on Audible to mark the tenth anniversary of his death. Tagore was diligent about her work schedule, aiming to allocate time for her family, but she noted that punctuality was a challenge for the late actor.

Tagore reflected, “This was unfeasible because Kaka consistently arrived after 12 for a shift that began at 9 am. Consequently, we were unable to meet our deadlines. The entire team would then pressure me to work overtime to fulfill the schedule. This became a regular occurrence, and given my numerous projects with Kaka, I found myself in a difficult position.” Despite their successful partnership on screen, Sharmila chose to broaden her range by working with different actors. She also noted that even Rajesh Khanna believed it was not advantageous to appear in too many films alongside the same leading lady.

These considerations influenced Sharmila’s choice to limit her collaborations with Khanna, despite their previous achievements together.
