From box-office hits to fresh faces, something’s changing in Bollywood with a major shift romance is in the air again - just like old days of the industry? find out what’s truly going on behind this sudden shift in film trends.

There’s no denying that Bollywood and Romance, these two words have always been a beautiful match that once defined an entire generation of Bollywood cinema. From timeless stories to unforgettable songs and powerful emotions, classic love stories like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Devdas, Bombay, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Fanaa, Rockstar and many more have made Bollywood a global name. But for the past decade, bringing in a complete romantic film seemed to taken a backseat, its not like the genre was vanished away but love was often mixed with action, thriller or horror rather just focusing only on whole love story. A complete romantic drama became rare, until now, something that has shifted.

Is Romance Making a Comeback in Bollywood?

2025 has bought a new wave of romantic films, romance seems to be returning in full swing. In this month of July alone, Bollywood gave us Metro…In Dino which is a heartwarming love story that left a deep impact on viewers. Then came Saiyaara which became a surprise box office success by crossing ₹100 crore mark in just four days of its release and the film also introduce two newcomers, Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda.

Around the same time now Aap Jaisa Koi is impressing audiences not on bigscreen but on Netflix streaming platform with its mature take on love in later years of life. These films are not just being made – they’re being loved and the results are visible. And more on the way are Param Sundari, Dhadak 2 and more which are already lined up for the release in coming days.

This rise in romantic dramas makes one thing clear – Bollywood is somewhere slowly going back to what it did best which gave us some of the cult favourites.

What’s the Reason Behind this Shift?

Changing Audience Preferences

Amid the popularity of big action thrillers or horrors, many young people especially Gen Z and millennials crave for emotional storytelling and simple stories that feel real. While Gen Z seeks comfort through dreamy and soulful love stories, Millennials often seek for the kind of romance they grew up watching in old Bollywood films, lighting up the nostalgia mode on.

The Streaming Effect

The rise of OTT streaming giants like Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar and others has changed the way films are consumed. For those unaware, these platforms often provide the data to filmmakers/producers on what people watch, rewatch or engage with most and always love stories top the list. And this analytics helps producers know what people really want. So its natural to see more love stories are being released.

A Break from Usual Genres

The last few years in Bollywood were filled with heavy action movies like Animal, Kill, Marco and spooky comedies like Stree 2, Munjya, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Shaitaan. While these genres pulled crowds and also became superhit at box office, but still people may have been looking for a fresh breathing space. While romantic films offer that gentle escape which brings warmth, laughter and sometimes tears but in a good way.

New Faces, New Stories

One reason why films like Saiyaara clicked is because of fresh casting. Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda brought freshness unlike the usual trend of casting actors who appear much older than the age their roles demand.

Romance is Social Media-Friendly

In today’s world of reels, quotes and viral scenes romance fits perfectly. Love stories are easy to share, easy to relate to and often spark emotions that spread quickly online. Whether it’s a catchy song, a heartfelt dialogue or a cute scene – romantic content indeed connects across all generations.

Will This Romance Last?

So, is this return to romance or just another short-lived trend? Or Bollywood is finding its original charm again? Looking at the recent wave, it feels like the industry is reconnecting with its roots or its await to see its lasting impact. And with young audiences embracing love stories again this shift might be more than temporary.

Romantic films that once made Bollywood what it is today and now they seem to be making a return with a modern touch. Whether it’s nostalgia, streaming trends or the need for feel-good stories  but one thing is clear that Bollywood is falling in love with romance all over again. And maybe, just maybe, it’s here to stay.
