As the film released on the big screens, it caught a lot of public’s attention. Fans loved his work. Welcome to Sajjanpur was released in 2008 and was Benegal’s foray into comedy-drama. It was a rural comedy that satirized the everyday lives of people in Indian villages. The film was critically acclaimed for its engaging narrative and relatable characters.
Talking about the same to Lehren Entertainment, Shyam Benegal shared how working for a comedy-drama was his longtime wish, but he was just not able to get the right subject. He also said that comedy films are not easy to do, because it is tough to make people laugh and send a message via entertaining the audience. With ‘Welcome To Sajjanpur’, he entered into the comedy space righteously. The film went out to be so good in the viewer’s vision that it was chosen for the London Film Festival and was thereafter also awarded under several categories.
