For years, fans wondered when Tom Cruise would finally hold an Oscar after giving some of the most daring performances in Hollywood. That moment has finally arrived but not in the way most expected over the years. The actor received his first-ever Academy Award, an Honorary Oscar, at the Governors Awards on November 16 – a moment that left him visibly emotional.
The award was presented to Cruise by filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu with whom he is currently working on an untitled project slated for an October 2026 release. Their collaboration added a personal layer to the ceremony as the Mission Impossible actor stepped on stage to share what cinema has meant to him.
During his speech, Cruise spoke from the heart about the power of films and the way they bring people together. “The cinema, it takes me around the world,” he said. “It helps me to appreciate and respect differences… we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together… and that is the power of this art form.” He added that filmmaking isn’t just his career — “it is who I am.”

Cruise also reflected on his early memories of sitting in a dark theatre as a child, watching the beam of light hit the screen. He described how cinema opened his imagination, sparked his desire for adventure and pushed him to understand humanity through storytelling. That curiosity, he said, has guided him ever since.
Alongside Cruise, the event also celebrated other industry icons, as Debbie Allen received her Honorary Oscar presented by Cynthia Erivo, production designer Wynn Thomas was honoured for his extensive work, and Dolly Parton accepted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award through a pre-recorded message due to health reasons.
Tom Cruise ’s Oscar moment, however stood out, as it was a long-awaited acknowledgment of a journey defined by passion, persistence and storytelling that has touched audiences for decades.
