Superman Movie Critic Review:
It requires metahuman skills to keep rebooting and refreshing a comic book character that was created in the 1930s.
Writer-director James Gunn does it with Krypto. When a gasping-for-life Clark Kent/Superman (David Corenswet) is dragged to his secret crystalline home to be revived, Krypto the dog saves not just the superhero from an alien planet but also Gunn’s film. Bow-wow, wag-wag, Krypto gets the applause each time he flies in for a timely rescue. He also gets the laughs with his overenthusiastic greetings, his jumps and his boundless energy. Truly, a doggie version of almost killing with love.
Amidst a whole lot of confusing metahumans, some good, some bad, an assortment of black holes and universes that include a pocket universe, and powers that provide sci-fi and CGI experts with lucrative employment, Gunn brings in one more aww-inspiring moment – an alien infant that must be rescued from CGI fire by Superman, good metahuman Mr Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and Krypto. With Krypto slobbering all over the infant, the cuteness quotient shoots up.
For more inclusivity, write in the coloured Mali (Dinesh Thyagarajan) Superman rescued long ago but still remembers. A squirrel too gets saved in the nick of time, giving an additional layer to Superman’s climactic punchline that he’s not really an alien, he has all the qualities of a human. “I screw up all the time and that’s being human.” It helps make Superman disarmingly charming.
Clark and fellow journalist Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) are already an established secret couple. But an interview that Superman grants Lois is spirited, giving a fresh note to their equation. Unlike the Trump-like America, America and America alone, Superman goes global this time, stepping in with his powers when bully Boravia invades the vulnerable Jarhanpur. Two fictionalised countries that could well stand for Hollywood’s version of Russia and Ukraine. During his exclusive with Lois, his defence, “But millions would’ve died,” is a bonus to Superman being human.
With appearances and a message from his biological parents on another planet, a warm stopover at his earth-parents’ home and a swift visit from a sprightly girl cousin, Superman becomes more wholesome.
There are baddies all over, the super baddy being Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). It is ho-hum that Superman will battle the galaxy of metahumans Luthor has unleashed on him, the special effects (whole cities crumbling) feeling the weight of déjà vu.
But Gunn’s Superman works at the end of it.
Superman Watch Or Not?: The aww moments are a new reason for Superman fans to catch him once again in the theatres.
