Over the past year, a noticeable shift has taken place. Filmmakers are choosing sports as a strong backdrop to tell emotional and character-driven stories. From cricket and wrestling to motocross and shooting, the range itself shows how serious this change is becoming.
A New Direction For Telugu Cinema..
Tollywood has always been about scale and emotion, but sports dramas add a different kind of depth. They bring discipline, struggle and personal journeys into focus – as the industry has already delivered memorable films like Jersey, Sye, Thammudu, and Golconda High School. Now, the upcoming lineup suggests something bigger. It feels like the industry is consciously expanding its creative space. And for audiences, this could mean a refreshing mix of entertainment and realism.
Let’s take a closer look at some of these upcoming sports-based films.
Peddi – Cricket & Wrestling Come Together
One of the most talked-about projects right now is Ram Charan’s Peddi, directed by Buchi Babu Sana. The film blends cricket and kusthi (wrestling), set against in a rural backdrop. Adding to the excitement is music by AR Rahman. The film is scheduled to release on April 30, 2026 and expectations are naturally high.
Biker – Motocross Racing
Sharwanand, mostly seen in a soft yet boy next door roles, is trying something completely different this time with Biker. Turning up the unstoppable mode with this film exploring motocross racing, a sport rarely shown in Indian cinema.

Beyond Telugu: A Wider Trend?
Interestingly, this shift isn’t limited to Tollywood. Other industries have also experimented with sports stories recently, last year. With Tamil films like Bison, Phoenix and Runner, along with Malayalam films like Alappuzha Gymkhana, have explored similar theme Of sports drama. This shows a broader trend across Indian cinema where sports is becoming a strong narrative tool.
And Tollywood seems to be entering a phase where storytelling is expanding beyond its comfort zone. With films like Ram Charan’s Peddi, Sharwanand’s Biker and others exploring different sports, the industry is clearly testing new ideas.
Whether all these films succeed or not, one thing is clear.. the intent to evolve is visible. And for audiences, that’s always a good sign.
