Prithviraj Sukumaran has recently addressed the issues highlighted in the Hema Committee report regarding sexual harassment within the Malayalam film industry. The report has exposed various allegations, including assaults faced by female artists and issues related to facilities and gender bias.
Several actresses have come forward with their experiences, naming prominent figures like Jayasurya, Maniyapilla Raju, Mukesh and Idavela Babu. While some industry veterans like Mammootty and Mohanlal haven’t spoken yet on the matter, Prithviraj Sukumaran has broke silence, criticizing the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) for its handling of these complaints.
At a recent press conference, Prithviraj Sukumaran expressed his frustration with AMMA’s response to sexual harassment complaints. He emphasized that if allegations are made against actors, a thorough investigation is necessary and those found guilty should be punished. The Goat Life actor specifically criticized AMMA for its poor response to a complaint filed by actress Sridevika against director Thulasidas, calling for stronger intervention and more serious handling of such issues.
While, the Hema Committee report also mentioned the influence of a powerful group within the Malayalam film industry. In response, Prithviraj Sukumaran stated, “Just because I haven’t faced any issues from a so-called influential group doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. If anyone in Malayalam cinema has been affected by such a group, their grievances must be heard. If such a body exists, it should be dismantled.” He also urged others in the industry to join in addressing these concerns.
Known for his direct approach, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s clear and honest remarks on the Hema Committee report has impressed many, who appreciate his willingness to address these sensitive issues openly. The video of actor’s statement shared on Reddit, under which the comments read, “man knows how to put his thoughts into words in such a delicate manner”. Another comment read, “He was very much strong in telling these things. At no point he was defensive or was trying to fake things. And even though prepared beforehand, his closing statement was impressive.”
On the professional front, Prithviraj Sukumaran is gearing up for his much-awaited directorial venture film ‘L2: Empuraan’ and his last release ‘Aadujeevitham’ earned huge praise from both critics and audience alike.
