Pedro Pascal may be seen as the internet’s ultimate heartthrob but the actor recently revealed he felt far from that while working on his latest film Materialists. In a candid chat with Vanity Fair, the 50-year-old actor shared his emotional and physical struggles during the shoot.
Pedro Pascal who stars opposite Dakota Johnson in the romantic comedy, confessed that the experience wasn’t easy. He said, “It was the oldest I’d ever felt in life. It was the weakest I’d ever felt.” The actor was recovering from a painful back injury sustained on the set of Gladiator II (2024) and had also fallen down stairs at his father’s home in Chile. By the time filming for the Materialists began, and he admitted saying, “I couldn’t do a push-up.”
Pascal plays a desirable Manhattan man in the film but he didn’t quite feel like one during production. “It was such a scary, fraudulent thing to feel like I could play somebody who was the catch of Manhattan,” he said. Despite his doubts, the interviewer assured him he looked great on screen, to which Pascal responded, “You think I’m hot in it? Thank God!”
Even as fans and the media continue to label him as charming and appealing, Pascal revealed he often doesn’t feel that way inside. Reflecting on Chelsea Handler’s compliment at the Critics Choice Awards, he said, “I was in a sling, I was overweight, and when the camera cut to me, I didn’t think anything could be further from the truth.”
Beneath the spotlight, Pedro Pascal continues to grapple with insecurities like anyone else. Materialists might have shown him as a romantic lead but it also gave a glimpse of his vulnerability behind the scenes.
