The highly anticipated anime film Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom has officially received a release date for U.S. theatrical release. Set to premiere in North America on November 8, 2024, the new film promises to expand on the beloved Overlord series with an exciting new chapter that delves deeper into its dark fantasy world.
Titled in Japanese as ‘Overlord Sei Oukoku-hen’ the film, produced by animation studio, Madhouse, will continue the story of Ainz Ooal Gown, the powerful undead overlord who finds himself trapped in the world of Yggdrasil, a virtual reality game that has become all too real.
Yukie Sugawara, who penned the script for the film, highlighted how the storyline will delve into themes of power, ambition, and the moral complexities of Ainz’s rule.
Directed by Naoyuki Ito, the film is based on the light novel series by Kugane Maruyama, Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom will focus on the power struggle within the Re-Estize Kingdom and Ainz’s growing influence as he tightens his grip on the world. Fans of the series can expect more of the intricate plotlines, rich character development, and high-stakes battles that have made Overlord a standout in the anime community.
Sony Pictures, who acquired Crunchyroll in 2021, will release the anime feature film in large premiere formats and Imax in Japanese original with English subtitles and dub. The film will compete at the theatres with, the Lionsgate movie, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, along with Anthony Mackie starrer science fiction thriller, Elevation.
The series has built a dedicated fan base since its debut in 2015, thanks to its unique blend of fantasy, strategy, and a morally ambiguous protagonist. With three successful seasons and several OVAs, the Overlord franchise continues to thrive, making this upcoming film one of the most anticipated anime releases of the year.
