Businessman Sanjay Kapur, formerly married to actress Karisma Kapoor, died on June 12, 2025, while participating in a polo match in Windsor, England. The cause of Sunjay Kapur’s death has been reported as a heart attack.
The marriage between Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur was arranged by their families after her separation from her former fiancé, Abhishek Bachchan; however, the relationship eventually deteriorated, culminating in a highly publicized divorce.
Karisma Kapoor wed Sanjay Kapur on September 29, 2003, in a lavish yet intimate ceremony held in Mumbai. The union was arranged, a fact confirmed by both Karisma and her father, Randhir Kapoor, in early interviews at that time. When questioned about the wedding, Randhir Kapoor had informed Rediff back then, “We will be able to provide you with the date in a few days. The wedding is an arranged one. Both Karisma and Sunjay are familiar with each other, but the alliance has been established with the assistance of mutual friends.” Karisma, for her part, stated, “My parents will determine [her marriage] for me.”
In the subsequent years, the marriage between Karisma and Sanjay began to deteriorate. Sunjay, who was married to Karisma from 2003 until 2016, had two children with her – a daughter named Samaira and a son named Kiaan. The couple welcomed their daughter Samaira Kapur in 2005, and their family was completed with the birth of their son Kiaan in 2011. However, their relationship suffered significant strain. Karisma later accused Sanjay of mistreating her, even during their honeymoon, and alleged that he had multiple affairs. Conversely, Sanjay claimed that she had married him solely for his financial status.
The divorce proceedings were prolonged and quite public. Following several years of separation, they ultimately finalized their divorce in 2016. This event was extensively covered in the media as one of the most tumultuous separations within Bollywood circles.
Sunjay Kapur entered into marriage with Priya Sachdev after his divorce from Karisma. Priya had a daughter named Safira Chatwal from her former marriage to Vikram Chatwal. In 2018, Sunjay and Priya welcomed a son, Azarius.
