Veteran actress Aruna Irani recently addressed the long-rumoured love story between two Bollywood icons – Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini. In her recent interview with Lehren Retro, Aruna revealed details that many fans may have never heard before.
She confirmed that Sanjeev Kumar was deeply in love with Hema Malini and wanted to marry her. However, it wasn’t just emotions that defined their story – it was also personal style and cultural expectations that pulled them apart.

Aruna Irani, who fondly called Sanjeev Kumar “Hari Bhai”, a name he apparently didn’t appreciate – described him as a very simple man. “He had no style at all,” she said, laughing as she recalled his habit of wearing plain kurta-pajamas and chappals.
She went on to say, “Maine suna vo Hema ji se shaadi karna chah rahe the, toh Hema ji ko milne usi haal mein chale gaye. (I heard he wanted to marry Hema ji, so he went to meet her dressed like that.)” Aruna then shared Hema Malini’s reaction: “Hema ji ne bola ‘Nooo’.” That moment, according to her, marked the beginning of the end for their relationship.
“Hema ji bahut try kar rahi thi ki kar lu, par hota tha jo kare jama kar rahi thi.” Hema ji was really trying to make it work, but things just didn’t add up.) Aruna explained how Sanjeev’s casual dressing and low-key personality didn’t align with Hema’s world. “Ek toh uski personality bhi style ki nahi thi… toh sab locha pad gaya,” she said.
