Karla Sofía Gascón who has been at the centre of the controversy over past social media posts,she will be attending the prestigious Oscars 2025. This comes after she missed several major award shows including the SAG Awards. As per the reports in Page Six, a source confirmed that Netflix which backed her film Emilia Pérez will cover her travel expenses for the ceremony which is scheduled to take place on March 2, 2025.
Karla, the first openly trans woman nominated for Best Actress has kept a low profile since her old tweets resurfaced online which grabbed widespread attention. The tweets which included comments on about race and religion led to widespread criticism. In response, few days later the Spanish actress apologized and withdrew from promotional activities for Emilia Pérez.

Following the backlash, Karla opted out of several award shows including the Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, Spain’s Goya Awards and many more. Netflix distanced itself from her, removing her from campaign ads and stepping back from supporting her award season run. Despite this, Emilia Pérez has been one of the most celebrated films of the season, earning 13 Oscar nominations.
Director Jacques Audiard and co-star Zoe Saldaña both addressed the controversy. Audiard called her past statements “inexcusable”, while Saldaña expressed disappointment. Karla later released a statement apologizing and acknowledging the harm caused by her word Now that she is attending, it remains unclear if she will participate in media interviews or red carpet events. While some industry members have criticized Netflix’s decision to cover her travel costs, others believe her presence at the Oscars will allow her to acknowledge her nomination while letting the film shine.
