Randhir Kapoor, the eldest son of Raj Kapoor, was a well-known actor during the 1960s and had a flourishing career. His marriage to Babita, also a well-known actress, attracted significant media attention, especially their tumultuous separation in the 1980s. Babita took on the responsibility of raising their daughters, Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, alone, challenging the patriarchal traditions of the family by guiding them toward careers in the film industry.
Randhir Kapoor And Babita’s Secret Love-Story
Randhir Kapoor and Babita Shivdasani, both celebrated stars of the Indian cinema of the 1960s, began their romantic journey at a young age. Their relationship developed on the set of a Raj Kapoor film, which also included her father, Hari Shivdasani. As the eldest son of a prominent Bollywood family, Randhir fell deeply in love with Babita.
After two years of a relatively private relationship, Babita confronted Randhir, asking him to either marry her or end the romance. In response, he suggested she take on the lead role in “Kal Aaj Aur Kal.” Surprisingly, the Kapoor family, which traditionally did not allow daughters or daughters-in-law to pursue acting careers, accepted Babita into their family. But, there came challenges, as Babita had to quit acting in order to be the wife of Mr. Kapoor. Ultimately, adhering to the patriarchal expectations set by Raj Kapoor, Babita and Randhir were married in 1971.
Failed Marriage Of Babita – Randhir
Later, when Karisma Kapoor was born – Babita led her life away from the show business. With no voices raised against the patriarchal norms of the Kapoor family, Babita peacefully worked on nurturing her daughter Karisma. But, during the 80’s, Randhir Kapoor faced a massive decline in his career. His films began to fail at the box office, turning him into a drunkard. Not only did he came out as bad father, but also lost focus on his acting goals at the moment.
Babita chose to part ways with Randhir and reportedly asked him to leave her home. Rather than spending her days in hurt, Babita became a stronger woman, who decided to break the norms. She prepared young Karisma for the glamour world, and it was just a 16 year old Karisma Kapoor, who debuted in Bollywood with her charismatic aura.
Despite their separation, Randhir and Babita never sought a divorce. At this point of life, and after facing all the highs and lows in his personal and professional life, Randhir is enjoying his grandfather phase. Kareena often shares pictures of her sons Taimur Ali Khan and Jeh Ali Khan spending quality time with their ‘nana’.
