It’s exactly one years that Assam lost its biggest musical sensation, Zubeen Garg, in a seaside accident in Singapore, where he went to perform at the Northeast Festival.
Zubeen Garg, born on November 18, 1972, in Tura, Meghalaya, began his professional music career with his Assamese album Anamika in 1992.
Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has worked as a singer, composer, songwriter, music director, actor and filmmaker, recording in numerous Indian languages.
Although he was already a major name in Assam and the Northeast, the singer became widely recognised across India with “Ya Ali” from the 2006 Hindi film Gangster: A Love Story. The song became one of his most recognisable Hindi film recordings.
He also lent his voice to songs including “Dilruba” from Namastey London and “Jag Lal Lal Lal” from Big Brother.
A year after the death of Assam’s most celebrated singer and cultural icon, Zubeen Garg, his music continues to resonate across the state.
Garg died in Singapore on September 19 last year after becoming unresponsive during a second swim near Lazarus Island of Singapore. Despite immediate rescue efforts and CPR, he was pronounced dead at Singapore General Hospital.
Zubeen Garg’s death in Assam turned his first death anniversary into an occasion of remembrance with a three-day Zubeen Divas celebration featuring music, prayers, and cultural programmes at Zubeen Kshetra in Kamarkuchi.
