American film producer Harvey Weinstein’s recent sex-crimes trial in Manhanttan ended in a mistrial on one remaining rape charge after tensions inside the jury room forced the judge to call off deliberations. The mistrial was declared after the jury foreperson told the judge that he was not willing to continue deliberating, citing conflicts and feeling threatened by other jurors.
Before the mistrial , the jury had already delivered a partial verdict. Weinstein was found guilty of a criminal sexual act in the first degree against Miriam Haley and was acquitted of a similar charge involving Kaja Sokola. However, they could not reach an agreement on the third-degree rape charge involving Jessica Mann, who had previously testified about an incident in 2013.
The tensions among jurors became evident days before the mistrial. Reports revealed that some jurors felt pressured to change their votes and there were claims that some discussions involved information not presented during the trial. The foreperson expressed concerns about being verbally threatened and feeling unsafe during deliberations. Despite these claims,other jurors stated that they didn’t experience the deliberations as threatening and were surprised by the foreperson’s decision.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg confirmed his commitment to retrying Weinstein on the unsolved charge. Jessica Mann also stated her readiness to testify again, emphasizing her determination to seek justice. Weistein’s defense team, however, argued that the case should be dismissed due to alleged juror misconduct.
This mistrial adds another chapter to Harvey Weinstein’s ongoing legal issues. He has already been convicted in both New York and California on separate sexual assault charges and continues to serve his sentences while appealing the verdicts.
