Charlize Theron, who originally brought the character Imperator Furiosa to life in the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road, has shared her thoughts on Anya Taylor-Joy taking over the role in the prequel, Furiosa. Theron’s reaction highlights a seamless passing of the torch within the Mad Max franchise.
On Saturday, at the fourth annual party of Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, the actress spoke highly of Taylor-Joy’s performance to The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s amazing, it’s a beautiful film,” Theron remarked, expressing her support and admiration for Taylor-Joy’s talent. When asked if the actress had discussed with Taylor-Joy about the film, she stated that both the actress haven’t connected for quite a long time. She said, “It’s been one of those — we can actually make a comedy out of it. We keep running into each other and in places when we don’t have time to really talk to each other, so we’re constantly like, ‘Oh my god, OK, let’s get together!’ And then life takes over. But it will happen when it’s right.”
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) serves as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), focusing on the backstory of the fierce and determined warrior before she became the formidable ally of Max Rockatansky. Anna Taylor-Joy steps into the role with Chris Hemsworth co-starring as a devious warlord. The film delves into Furiosa’s origins, set fifteen years before the events of Fury Road.
The film, directed by George Miller, premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May this year. Miller’s choice to cast Taylor-Joy, known for her roles in The Queen’s Gambit (2020) and Emma (2020), has been met with excitement. Taylor-Joy’s versatility and strong screen presence make her a fitting successor to Theron’s portrayal.
