Family Reveals Asrani’s Last Wish Before His Passing; Tributes Pour In From PM Narendra Modi & Others

Veteran actor Asrani passed away at 84 after a prolonged illness. His wife honoured his wish for a quiet farewell as the family held a private funeral. Tributes from PM Narendra Modi and Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis poured in remembering his legacy.

Veteran actor and comedian Govardhan Asrani fondly known as Asrani passed away on Monday, October 20 at the age of 84, after being hospitalized for nearly five days due to health complications. The actor breathed his last at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu, Mumbai and doctors revealed that fluid had accumulated in his lungs which worsened his condition.

Asrani’s funeral was held the same evening at the Santacruz Crematorium, in the presence of only close family members even before informing to the media. As his family later confirmed that this was done according to his wishes. The actor had clearly told his wife Manju Asrani that he did not want any public commotion or media attention after his death. And his personal assistant Babubhai had shared, “Asrani sahab was admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu four days ago. From what the doctors told us, there was fluid accumulation in his lungs. He died today, October 20, around 3:30 pm. The last rites have already been completed.”

When asked why the funeral was conducted so swiftly Babubhai added, “He wanted to go in peace and had told his wife not to make his death into an event. This is why the family only spoke about his death after the funeral was conducted.” Meanwhile, the family plans to hold a small prayer meeting soon.

The news of his passing on Diwali night left fans and the industry in shock. Tributes poured in from across India with political leaders and actors remembering his immense contribution. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Govardhan Asrani Ji. A gifted entertainer and a truly versatile artist, he entertained audiences across generations. He particularly added joy and laughter to countless lives through his unforgettable performances. His contribution to Indian cinema will always be cherished. My condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also paid tribute, writing, “Deeply saddened by the demise of the legendary actor Govardhan Asrani ji. His unmatched versatility and unique sense of humour brought joy and laughter to millions. From the iconic jailer in Sholay to memorable roles in Chupke Chupke, Golmaal, Aap Ki Kasam, Abhimaan, Baton Baton Mein, Chhoti Si Baat, Dhamaal and many more, his performances have left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. My humble tributes to him and deepest condolences to his family and millions of fans. Om Shanti.”

Asrani leaves behind a legacy of laughter, simplicity and grace, a man who lived to make others smile and wished to leave this world quietly, just as he lived.
