Bollywood’s ever-dashing star Suniel Shetty, known for his intense screen presence and action-packed performances has acted in over 100 films across a career spanning three decades! From cult classics like Dhadkan, Border, Hera Pheri, Bhagam Bhaag, Phir Hera Pheri, Balwaan to expanding his presence in South Indian cinema, he has made a lasting impact. However, not many know that Suniel Shetty is a cricketer at heart, who once aspired to make a name in the sport before entering films. He believes his acting career happened by “luck, and not by chance.”
In an exclusive throwback interview with Lehren Podcast, Suniel Shetty revealed that he was discovered purely for his well-built physique which was rare among actors at the time. He was introduced to producer Pahlaj Nihalani, leading to his entry into Bollywood. When asked if he always wanted to be an actor, he surprised everyone with his response: “Nahi, nahi, nahi. Bachpan mein the only dream I had was to become a cricketer.” (No, no, no. As a child, my only dream was to become a cricketer.)
Even after years in the film industry, Suniel Shetty still holds cricket close to his heart. He shared, “Even now, my first passion is playing cricket whenever I can aur mujhe hamesha cricketer banna tha isliye main Bombay schools mein khela karta tha” (I always wanted to be a cricketer, so I played in Bombay schools). He further mentioned that he played for various school and college teams, reinforcing how deep his love for the sport runs.

At 63, Suniel Shetty remains an inspiration with his fitness and sharp looks. Besides acting, he actively follows his cricket passion. He co-owns Ferit Cricket Bash and captains the Mumbai Heroes in the Celebrity Cricket League. Interestingly, adding to the cricket connection, his daughter Athiya Shetty is married to Indian cricketer KL Rahul. Suniel Shetty has often expressed his joy, calling Rahul a blessing in his family.
