Selena Gomez and her longtime on-off boyfriend, Justin Bieber, ended their relationship in 2018. And recently, the songstress said that she was ‘really proud,’ of how the turbulent relationship made her more mature in a recent appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. The Only Murders In The Building star shared that focusing on herself helped her stand up for her needs.
Selena Gomez addressed her breakup with Justin Bieber, who married the model Hailey Bieber just months after his breakup in 2018, in the podcast. The Disney alum said, “It allowed me to develop a character where I don’t tolerate any sort of nonsense or disrespect.” Even though she is more secure in her place in the entertainment industry now, Selena initially felt underconfident after the split.
Selena recalled, “I was, you know, obviously going through a really tough breakup, and then I was left with the question of my career and where am I gonna go and what’s gonna happen.” However, the breakup is not the only thing that happened with Selena. Just a year before her breakup, Selena was diagnosed with lupus and needed a kidney transplant in 2017. However, Selena revealed it was actually been really good for her as it was necessary for her to walk through those things.
The singer admitted, “And then my medical stuff kind of kicked in, but being on the other side of it, I have to be honest, it’s actually been really good for me.” “It was necessary for me to walk through those things, I had a lot of soul searching to do,” continued Selena. Selena then admitted, “By all means, I don’t have life figured out, but I do know that during that time I was learning so much about myself.”
Despite going through all these, the Spring Breakers actress isn’t rushing into any new relationships. Selena Gomez shared, “I find my toleration of any sort of discomfort, usually disrespect, or whatever, even just unnecessary stuff, it’s not taking over me anymore.” On the work front, the actress and singer is currently receiving some of the best reviews of her career for her hit Hulu comedy series Only Murders In The Building, on which she costars with comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short.
