‘Karan Johar’ Talks About His Upcoming Action Venture, Movie Sequels And Collaborating With ‘Salman Khan’

Karan Johar states ''One should make a franchise only when it’s a good story. Not everything should be 2'', feels extremely elated on 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai's' 25th anniversary.

Karan Johar, the ace director known for his glamour and dynamism, made his directorial debut with the super-hit film ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ in 1998. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, the film recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Karan is also renowned for creating complete family films like ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ and ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna,’ as well as critically acclaimed works like ‘My Name Is Khan.’ Johar leads one of the country’s top film production houses, ‘Dharma Productions.’ His multifaceted talents extend to hosting the talk show ‘Koffee With Karan,’ which consistently trends on social media and garners high TRP ratings due to its large and loyal fan base.

In an interview with ‘Pinkvilla’ on the occasion of ‘KKHH’s Silver Jubilee, Johar opened up about Dharma-movie sequels, future ventures, and collaborations with top stars in the industry.

When asked about his potential action movie, the filmmaker explained, ”When I announce something, I make it. To me, action is also the result of an emotion. Just fighting someone for no reason is a film that will go nowhere. Motivationally, action should come from a strong emotional place. For me, action is a subset, and emotion takes the forefront. If I can establish the narrative that emotion is at the forefront, action will follow, and then it’s a matter of bringing great talent on board. Popcorn is great, but making a popcorn action entertainer alone doesn’t excite me.”

Regarding the sequel to the ‘Dulhania Series’ starring Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, Karan shared, “I don’t know how to plan these things. We do want to make the third Dulhania film, and I hope we will at some point. It’s a love story franchise that actually doesn’t exist, it’s only us who created it. Humpty, Badri, and now we’re looking forward to making another Dulhania film.”

Karan added, “We are working on creating some franchises, which I don’t want to reveal at this point in time. One should create a franchise only when it’s a good story. Not everything should have a sequel. Sometimes, I am advised for commercial reasons, but I often wonder if it’s fair to the audience. But the world does it, and it is successful. I’ve been asked many times to make ‘K3G-2,’ but the story concluded where it had to. My faith is more in stories than franchises and numbers.”

Discussing his collaboration with Salman Khan in ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,’ the prolific producer expressed, “I have the deepest respect for Salman and his entire family. My father was very close to Salim Saab (Salim Khan). The fact that Salman agreed to be a part of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ has always held a special place in my heart. All I can say at this moment is that our collaboration will hopefully find its way to the screen very soon. I am not confirming it, nor am I denying it, as I am superstitious about certain things. I will speak about it when the time is right.”

Karan’s latest creation, ‘Rocky aur Rani kii Prem Kahaani,’ featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead roles, was well-received by Gen-Z and a specific segment of the audience. The film crossed the 150 crore rupees mark at the box office, establishing itself as a hit.
