Rajkumar Hirani is one of the multi-talented people in Bollywood. His films like Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, 3 Idiots, and Sanju are some of the really good movies this filmmaker has made. But writer, director, and editor Rajkumar Hirani always fails to give his movie justice through the trailer. And that’s where Dunki has failed too. The filmmaker has put the teasers and trailer through four different drops, which made it difficult for the audience to connect, and fans are really disappointed with the trailer. But Shah Rukh’s de-aging and his forced Punjabi dialect are two of the most highlighted things one can find in reviews. But let me tell you, it’s not the Dunki, but Shah Rukh Khan used the same forced dialect in his previous movies, ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ and ‘Zero’, and that is the reason those movies weren’t blockblusters. What if Dunki gets flopped at box office due to this reason. ?
In Jab Harry Met Sejal, a film by Imtiaz Ali, you will find Shah Rukh Khan’s character with a double accent. The filmmaker has shown Harry, a Punjabi guy living abroad who speaks Hindi, but just to show he is from Nurmahal, Jalandhar district, Punjab. There is a Punjabi tone to his Hindi language, a weird combination of Hindi and Punjabi that gets lost somewhere between Sejal’s (played by Anushka Sharma) Guajarati dialect. It seems like the director has gone wrong in casting. On the other hand, in another film, Jab We Met by Imtiaz Ali, a perfect casting of Geet’s (played by Kareena Kapoor) family gives you an authentic Punjabi family feel because of the correct dialect.
If we talk about Bauua Singh in the movie Zero, that guy is from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. There is a Meerut tone, i.e., western Uttar Pradesh dialect, that the actor tried to put in his dialogues, which doesn’t make audiences believe in the character.
Let’s consider the success of both films. Jab Harry Met Sejal was a commercial flop and was criticized by many. Its domestic box office collection reached Rs. 64 crore only after being Shah Rukh Khan’s movie. Zero, released in the year 2018, was a box office failure; it collected over Rs. 97 at the Indian box office. It’s also said that SRK took a break from acting after Zero’s failure.
In another film from the Yash Raj Film Universe, ‘Fan’, SRK played a double role, one of Aryan Khanna and another of his fan Gaurav. In the movie, Gaurav is a young guy, and for that, SRK tried to bring a younger tone to his language, but it seems like he put pressure on his teeth to bring a younger tone. He really couldn’t catch that voce in fluent way. This was another flop movie of Shah Rukh Khan.
And what if history repeats? The forced Punjabi dialect of Shah Rukh Khan is more noticeable in Dunki’s trailer than in those previous movies. Hardy, from Laltu, doesn’t have a flawless Punjabi accent. And not just that, but his old-age man dialect is also forced and dramatic.
Though Rajkumar Hirani’s film’s trailer always failed in the first place, the movie does a good job. If this is going to happen, it will be great because fans’ have high expectations from SRK after this year’s blockbusters, Pathaan and Jawan. And if history is going to repeat itself, this year-end film of SRK will be a major flop at the box office.
