For This Reason Madhuri Dixit Rejected A Role In ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’: ‘I Think People Would Have Hooted In The Theaters’

When presented with the opportunity to portray the eldest daughter-in-law, a character eventually embodied by Tabu, Madhuri declined due to a particular scene in the script.

Madhuri Dixit, the reigning queen of Bollywood during the vibrant decades of the 1980s and 90s, recently unveiled a pivotal moment in her career concerning Sooraj Barjatya’s cinematic gem, ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain.’ In the intricate process of casting for the film in 1998, Barjatya confronted a dilemma regarding the ideal role for Madhuri.

Despite holding a special place in Barjatya’s heart, Madhuri found herself in an intriguing predicament. In an enlightening interview with Reddiff.com, the ‘Aaja Nachle’ actress disclosed her unwavering commitment to any project by Sooraj Barjatya. However, when presented with the opportunity to portray the eldest daughter-in-law, a character eventually embodied by Tabu, Madhuri declined due to a particular scene in the script.

Following the resounding success of ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun,’ Madhuri felt a profound need for role progression. She articulated her stance, stating, “I cannot go one step back and do a role where anyone can fit in.” The filmmakers believed she would seamlessly fit into Tabu’s character, Sadhna, the sister-in-law of Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan.

Reflecting on her decision, Madhuri explained, “There is a scene in the film where Salman touches Tabu’s feet and hugs her. So there has to be this bhabhi-devar feeling between the two. But if you put me in Tabu’s place and visualize Salman touching my feet…I think people would have hooted in the theatres. And I think it’s right…because of HAHK, which was a love story between Salman and me.”

The actress concluded by revealing that she could only envision herself in the powerful role portrayed by Reema Lagoo, but she believed she was too young for it at the time.

The 1999 family drama boasted an ensemble cast, featuring Mohnish Bahl, Tabu, Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Alok Nath, Reema Lagoo, Shakti Kapoor, and Neelam Kothari.
