Can ‘Selfiee’ Finally End Box Office Hit Drought Of Akshay kumar?

Akshay Kumar has had six theatrical releases since then and out of which five turned out to be flops.

Akshay Kumar, one of the biggest star in the Hindi film industry, witnessed a golden phase at the box office from 2016 to 2019. The actor delivered back to back 12 hits in this span, a rare feat for even the biggest superstar of any film industry. It seemed that this unstoppable star will create new box office records. However Covid-19 put a sudden break to his unstoppable train of box office hits and suddenly something changed post Pandemic, and everything went downhill for him.

Akshay Kumar has had six theatrical releases since then and out of which five turned out to be flops. Bell Bottom (2021), Sooryavanshi (2021), Bachchhan Paandey (2022), Samrat Prithviraj (2022), Raksha Bandhan (2022) and Ram Setu (2022) could not even hit Rs 100 crore mark.

But with his next film ‘Selfiee’, which will hit the screens tomorrow, Akshay Kumar has got another golden opportunity to finally put an end to his constant failures at the box office. But can Akshay finally return to his pre-pandemic form with Selfiee?

Interestingly, the full-fledged advance booking has finally opened today, a day prior to the film’s release, so it’s too early to give a final verdict but we can make a calculated guess. The film, which is the official remake of 2019 Malayalam hit Driving Licence also stars Emraan Hashmi, Nushrat Bharruccha and Diana Penty has been in the news ever since its announcement. And makers have also put in a lot of effort in the film’s promotion. From the exciting trailer to two new promotional songs featuring Mrunal Thakur and Honey Singh, the producer’s extra efforts into the film’s promotion are quite evident.

But despite such excessive promotion, somehow the film has still not managed to create huge buzz among cinegoers. And as of now it even looks difficult for the film to even get to the double digit on the opening day.

Selfiee marks the first collaboration between Emraan and Akshay, and this could have been used as one of the major selling point to create the buzz around the film, and encouraged the fans of both stars to see them share screens for the first time. But instead they have opted for a safe formulae of promotional songs and with the exception of trailer launch and one or two events, both leading stars have hardly appeared together during any promotional events.

But Selfiee does have one advantage. Since last Friday releases Shehzada and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania underperformed, Selfiee will be the first choice for the cinegoers and since it is a solo release, it will get a good amount of screens across the country. And if it manages to hit the right chords with the public, Selfiee can still manage to do good business as it will have free reign at the box office for two weeks till the release of the Ranbir Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor- starrer ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’.
