Anil Sharma Dispels Rumours: Govinda Was Never Considered For Gadar 2: ‘It Was Always Supposed To Be Sunny’

Anil Sharma emphatically stated that Sunny Deol had always been the first and only choice for the lead role

In the wake of the resounding success of “Gadar 2,” rumours surrounding Govinda and Kajol’s supposed involvement in the original “Gadar” film have resurfaced. Filmmaker Anil Sharma, who directed the blockbuster franchise, has consistently refuted these claims and recently addressed the matter once more in a candid interview.

“Gadar,” released in 2001, enjoyed massive success, with Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel’s on-screen chemistry earning accolades from audiences.

In a conversation with Bollywood Thikana, Anil Sharma emphatically stated that Sunny Deol had always been the first and only choice for the lead role in “Gadar.” He quashed the notion that Govinda was ever considered for the part, saying, “How could it have been Govinda in that role? It was always supposed to be Sunny.”

Anil Sharma went on to share a humorous anecdote, suggesting that Govinda might have been mistaken about his potential involvement in the film. “Bechare, unko nahi yaad raha hoga (The poor guy was mistaken),” Sharma remarked. “I was working with him on something, and I told him I had a story for Sunny Deol. He asked me what it was, and I told him. He said it’s good that I went to Sunny, because he could never have done the movie.”

Meanwhile, Anil Sharma is basking in the glory of “Gadar 2,” which has become a massive success since its release on August 11, 2023, at the box office. The film has already amassed a staggering Rs 523 crore in earnings.

“Gadar 2” also boasts an ensemble cast, including Anil Sharma’s son, Utkarsh Sharma, along with Gaurav Chopra, Manish Wadhwa, Manoj Bakshi, Simrat Kaur, Luv Sinha, Rakesh Bedi, and more. The film’s triumphant performance continues to captivate audiences and reinforce Anil Sharma’s legacy in Indian cinema.
