Subhash Ghai Reveals It Was Shocking As Madhuri Dixit’s ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ Was Labelled Vulgar

30 Years Of ‘Khal Nayak, Subhash Ghai Says Choli Ke Peeche’ Was Labelled Vulgar: “Khal Nayak’ has completed three decades since its release in 1993. The film is still remembered for its iconic songs, performances, and impact on Indian cinema. It was directed and produced by Subhash Ghai and starred Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, and Jackie Shroff in lead roles. The film dealt with themes of crime, justice, and redemption, and it remains a significant part of Bollywood’s history. One of the songs from the film is ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’, which features talented actress Madhuri Dixit and is known for its catchy tune and controversial lyrics. 

“Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” became quite famous and garnered both praise and criticism for its suggestive lyrics and bold choreography. The song’s popularity contributed to the success of the film and remains a memorable part of Indian cinema history. As the film completed 30 years, filmmaker Subhash Ghai remembered the film, saying Choli ke Peeche was originally conceived as a folk song and the brouhaha over its lyrics was shocking.

In an interview with PTI, Subhash Ghai Said, “My closest memory of Khal Nayak is when people labelled Choli ke Peeche as vulgar. It was a tragedy for me—a major shock. We treated it as a folk song and presented it in an artistic way. But when the film was released, there were protests.”

The 78-year-old director added that “I remember a leading newspaper wrote ‘The song is a classical piece of Indian cinema, and that was a relief. It was a folk song, and now people understand that.”

The song was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, with lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi. It was sung by Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun.
