Ekta Kapoor, born on June 7, 1975, is a prominent Indian producer and director in the film and television industry, particularly known for her work in Hindi cinema and soap operas. She is the founder of Balaji Telefilms Limited, where she holds the positions of joint managing director and creative head.
Ekta Kapoor began her professional journey at the age of 17, interning under filmmaker Kailash Surendranath. With financial support from her father, she established Balaji Telefilms. Despite facing initial challenges, including the rejection of six pilot episodes, her determination led to her first significant achievement with the 1995 sitcom Hum Paanch.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Kapoor transformed Indian television with a number of successful programs, particularly those beginning with the letter ‘K’, including Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, and Kasautii Zindagii Kay. By 2001, she was producing more than 30 hours of television each week, reinforcing her reputation as the “Czarina of television”.
In 2001, Kapoor took a step into film production with Kyo Kii… Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta, featuring Govinda and Sushmita Sen. Although the film did not perform well at the box office, it signified the start of her film production career under Balaji Motion Pictures. Following films such as Kucch To Hai (2003) and Krishna Cottage (2004) delved into supernatural themes but failed to achieve notable commercial success.
The pivotal moment occurred with Kyaa Kool Hai Hum (2005), a comedy that struck a chord with viewers and achieved commercial success. This achievement was succeeded by Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), a crime drama that received both critical and commercial recognition. In 2014, Kapoor took on the role of producer for Ek Villain, a romantic action thriller that turned out to be a significant hit, earning over ₹169 crore worldwide. Her 2019 film Dream Girl, featuring Ayushmann Khurrana, also marked another considerable success, accumulating over ₹200 crore globally.
Acknowledging the transition towards digital content consumption, Kapoor established ALTBalaji in 2017, a subscription-based streaming service that features original web series. This initiative enabled her to engage with a younger, tech-savvy demographic, creating content that spans from drama to thriller, while also addressing a variety of regional preferences.
Kapoor’s impact on the entertainment sector has been extensively acknowledged. In 2020, she received the Padma Shri, which is India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, recognizing her substantial influence on the arts.
