Tamil actor-director R. Parthiban has come forward to address the controversy surrounding his recent comment about Trisha Krishnan at an award show. After facing criticism online and receiving a sharp response from the actress, Parthiban released a video on his YouTube channel explaining the situation and expressing regret.
The issue began when Trisha attended a wedding reception in Chennai with actor-politician Vijay. The public appearance drew attention because reports had surfaced about Vijay’s wife Sangeeta Sornalingam filing for divorce and mentioning an alleged affair with an unnamed actress in her plea.
Soon after, Parthiban made a remark during an award function that later sparked debate on social media.
What Happened At The Award Show
During the event, Parthiban was asked to speak about actors he had previously worked with. When Trisha’s photo appeared on the screen, he used a reference to her famous character from the film Ponniyin Selvan: I.
He said, “Indha Kundavaiye konjaneram kunthavaikkirathu nallathu (It is better to ask this Kundavai to sit at home for a while). It is better if she doesn’t step out because it is creating a lot of issues.”
The statement quickly spread online and triggered criticism. Many felt the remark was unnecessary and unfair.
Trisha’s Sharp Reply
Trisha responded on X with a message that caught attention.
She wrote, “A microphone doesn’t make a comment intelligent or humorous. It just makes stupidity louder. Crude words without knowledge say more about the speaker than the person they’re aimed at.”
She also claimed that her name and photo were added to the event presentation at the last minute after a request from “an individual conveyed through his assistant.”
Soon after her post gained traction, Parthiban apologised online, saying the situation had gone wrong and that he regretted the incident.
Parthiban Explains His Side
In his new video, Parthiban tried to explain the context behind his comment. He said the moment caught him off guard and he did not intend to target Trisha personally.
“There is a difference between a mistake and wrongdoing. A mistake is something done unknowingly. A wrongdoing is something done willingly. Similarly, there is a difference between an apology and expressing regret,” he said.
He also denied claims that he had asked organisers to display Trisha’s photo. According to him, that allegation is “100 per cent wrong.”
Parthiban added, “I am not a slave to anyone. I have never been paid to attend an event, and I never will be. I will not join any political party or compromise my integrity for money.”
At the same time, he shared his personal view about the wedding reception appearance.
“My honest feeling is that Thalapathy Vijay has overcome enormous obstacles to enter politics. Even the Karur stampede did not damage him as much as this wedding reception did. And Trisha should not have attended the wedding reception. That is my inner thought. But I did not go on stage with the intention of saying it.”
Why He Felt Regret Later
Parthiban said he realised soon after stepping off the stage that the remark could be misunderstood. Journalist Rangaraj Pandey even advised him that the comment could have been avoided.
According to him, he immediately asked organisers to remove the clip. However, by the next morning it had already spread online.
He also clarified that he never intended to suggest women should stay indoors. The interpretation, he said, troubled him.
While Parthiban has now explained his side and expressed regret, the incident shows how quickly a remark at a public event can turn into a larger controversy. For now, the debate around the comment, Trisha’s response, and the clarification video continues to draw attention online.
