Dhurandhar Movie Review:

Aditya Dhar’s intent is to set up what happened before New India woke up to counter a belligerently violent neighbour. Pak’s fond belief: that India is a land of darpoks who know not how to hit back.

Dhar therefore goes into Pakistan to put a long-term plan into operation. Which requires patience as the storytelling right now is about who’s in power and who’s murdering whom in the neighbouring country.

It held the risk of a disconnect with the power politics of Pakistan but gets saved by the power of performances. Akshaye Khanna, disarming and disturbing as Sher-e-Baloch Rehman Dakait, has the perfect foil in Ranveer Singh as Indian agent Hamza Ali Mazari. Rehman Dakait is the scene stealer with family man charm and catchy dance moves. But also brutal as a butcher, his violence legendary. Hamza is content in the background, shielding the steel within. Two standout moments: when Hamza is molested in Karachi and another, when he unwittingly facilitates the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai.

The savage Major Iqbal of ISI (Arjun Rampal), SP Chaudhary Aslam (Sanjay Dutt) and Chanakya Ajay Sanyal (R Madhavan) are vital side players, with Rakesh Bedi entertaining as wily Karachi politician Jameel Jamali.

All others, including Sara Arjun as Jamali’s daughter, are cast in sync with the ambience. Give a shout-out to casting director Mukesh Chhabra.

A striking standout is the cheeky music and background score. Sashwat Sachev, take a bow for yesterday’s chartbusters on today’s steroids.

But putting it all together is Aditya Dhar, in full control of all the departments, as he unhurriedly reserves the josh of victory for the second instalment.

Dhurandhar – Watch Or Not?: A slow start that grows and overwhelms.

Dhurandhar Movie Review Score Rating: 3 out of 5 (i.e. 3/5)
