Detective Sherdil Movie Critic Review:
There’s a germ of a promise when the credits open with how his parents, Sherni and Dilbag named him Sherdil and a peppy rap follows.
But genius in the guise of eccentric sleuths is such a familiar central character that when Sherdil (Diljit Dosanjh) punctuates other people’s dialogues with music from his harmonica, his studied cool grates.
The setting too is familiar though it is pleasing to the eye. Murder in a billionaire’s mansion in Budapest.
Sherdil is like James Bond, vacationing between cases. “Bade bade cases solve karta hoon aur chhote chhote vacations gift karta hoon.”
But when Indian-origin billionaire Pankaj Bhatti (Boman Irani) is assassinated in his car, Sherdil is piqued.
With Sagar Bajaj, Ali Abbas Zafar and director Ravi Chhabriya as writers, from snooty widow Rajeshwari Bhatti (Ratna Pathak Shah) and son Angad (Sumeet Vyas) to a missing driver, everybody’s suspect. Especially Purvak (Arjun Tanwar), the deaf-mute accountant who’s engaged to the dead man’s equally challenged daughter Shanti (Banita Sandhu). There’s also a maid (Kashmira Irani) who goes in and out.
Natasha (Diana Penty) and Sherdil have history and friction between them. But they work this case together.
It gets intriguing when Bhatti’s inheritance of 60 million euros goes to Purvak the nondescript accountant and fiancé, some to the favourite pet dog and also to Bodhi Mama (Chunky Panday), a disowned sibling who lives out there on the premise.
Every time a family member is questioned, there’s a flashback to the dead man’s equation with him or her. The ubiquitous mouth organ and the dog’s whimper serve like exclamation marks after each testimony.
By the time Chhabriya is done with laying bare a web of lies, hidden scams and family secrets, it is so wearisome that you don’t really care who killed Bhatti and why. The problem is there’s no drop mic moment, no palpable tension. And Sherdil’s genius, baffling to everybody around him, is too overdone to amuse.
At the end, you’re told, Sherdil’s off to Kenya. Oh no, another instalment coming up?
Detective Sherdil Watch Or Not?: It’s a missable case.
