Doherty’s death was confirmed on Sunday, July 14, 2024, by her publicist, Leslie Sloane.
Sloane toldPeoplemagazine, “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.” The publicist also added to her statement, “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
Friends and fans have poured out their tributes, remembering her not only as a talented actress but as a person of immense strength and grace. Her 90210 co-star Jason Priestley posted on his Instagram and captioned it, “Shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of my friend Shannen. She was a force of nature and I will miss her. Sending love and light to her family in this dark time.”
Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. She shared her journey openly with the public, undergoing a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. Her cancer went into remission in 2017, but returned as metastatic stage 4 cancer in 2019, which spread to her bones and brain over the following years. The actress had undergone surgery in 2023, as the cancer her spread to her brain.
Despite her illness, Doherty continued to work, demonstrating her unwavering dedication to her craft and her desire to live life to the fullest.
