The iconic writer duo of Indian cinema, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, popularly known as Salim-Javed, have returned after decades, not with a new script, but with a documentary series based on their illustrious careers. The docuseries titled Angry Young Men was released on August 20, 2024, on Amazon Prime Video. As audiences celebrate the return of this legendary duo, it’s worth revisiting the time when they shared their insightful and powerful casting principles that every filmmaker should consider.
Salim-Javed, known for revolutionizing Bollywood with action-packed blockbusters that shifted the focus from romantic films, made an indelible mark on Indian cinema. The duo wrote 24 films, 22 of which became superhits, consistently drawing full houses to theaters. Many of these films featured Amitabh Bachchan, who starred in more than 10 of their movies. His powerful performances, combined with the duo’s compelling narratives, earned him the title of ‘Angry Young Man’, a persona that dominated the big screen during that era.
Reflecting on the casting of Amitabh Bachchan for their first major hit together, Zanjeer (1973), Salim-Javed demonstrated their keen vision and uncompromising attitude that set them apart in the industry. Salim Khan emphasized how they were stubborn about casting Bachchan in Zanjeer, showcasing their ‘ideal’ approach to casting, which considers everything from performance to age-appropriate roles. He recounted an example of a director who initially wanted to cast Anil Kapoor but later considered Salman Khan and then eventually Arbaaz Khan, who was just 18-19 years old at the time. Salim questioned the director’s thoughts, emphasizing that once a decision is made, it is essential to remain consistent and approach the actor correctly–priorly considering Anil Kapoor to approaching directly a young 20-age gap actor, Arbaaz. It doesn’t become a right casting and raises the question about what character exactly needs.
Adding to Salim Khan’s points, Javed Akhtar highlighted the importance of a film needd strong script, a right director, and a skilled cameraman, just like that a film also needs the right actor. He stressed that casting the right actor is crucial, as they carry the responsibility of bringing the film to life.
